At first, the major companies who first received slash eight (/8) allotments were predicted to supply unused addresses. Then, others jumped in too. Soon, it was clear that there is a substantial amount of IPv4 addresses still available for sale.
Transferring the address blocks
There was a risk of sellers artificially inflating prices in the face of growing demand. Hence, companies like Microsoft set a precedent for affordable IPv4 pricing.
The company purchased a huge allotment from Nortel Networks, back in 2011. A total of 666,624 IP addresses were bought for $7.5 million USD. The price for a single IP address was finalized at around $11.25.
What’s intriguing is that Microsoft didn’t really need to make this purchase. In fact, ARIN was still handing out addresses at that time. However, it set a price range for future IP sales.
The market today
Now that IPv4 exhaustion is a global issue, the market is thriving with the tradeoffs. The market value varies, depending on various factors such as region, demand, and number of addresses involved.
